Hemp Oil and Hemp Seed Oil: What’s the Difference?

Hemp oil and hemp seed oil are not the same – and the difference is right there in the name! Hemp oil is extracted from the biomass of hemp plants and contains CBD, which occurs naturally in hemp. Hemp seed oil contains NO CBD, since it is made from pressed hemp seeds, and hemp seeds are CBD-free.

Hemp plants are a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant, a species that includes marijuana. However, hemp is extremely low in THC, the psychoactive ingredient of marijuana that requires it to be classified as a controlled substance. Marijuana is 5 to 30 percent THC, while hemp has just trace amounts, less than .3 percent, far too little to have any metal or cognitive effect.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is extracted from hemp seeds, with little THC and no CBD.
Hemp seed oil is gaining renown for reason different from CBD’s popularity. Proponents indicate hemp seed oil helps with hormone balance, since it contains gamma linoleic acid, a building block for prostagalndins, which help hormones act effectively. High in omega 3 fats and GLA, hemp seed oil is thought to reduce inflammation, strengthen immunity and increase resistance to cancer and heart disease. Since GLA is an appetite suppressant, advocates claim hemps seed oil assist in weight loss.

Hemp (CBD) Oil

Hemp oil is valued for its CBD or cannabidiol content. CBD is a cannabinoid that reacts with receptors in human cells that are associated with maintaining homeostasis, the overall state of balance and wellness in the body. Consequently, CBD has become associated with assisting with issues such as pain relief, anxiety reduction, alleviation of nausea and pain associated with chemotherapy, and possibly improving heart health and diabetes.

Speak with your doctor before adding any nutritional supplement to your daily routine and ask about possible interactions with medications you currently use.

Hemp Oil vs. Hemp Seed Oil: Production

Over-the-counter hemp oil is a legal product derived from the hemp plant and contains less than .3 percent THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid heavily present in marijuana.

However, CBD oil is present in the THC-heavy marijuana pant, and CBD extracted from marijuana has a high level of THC. This product is only legal where state laws regulate marijuana consumption.

In order to assure a level of THC below .3 percent, CBD oil is derived mainly from the stem of the hemp plant, the portion most likely to have accumulated traces of agricultural chemicals.

That’s why our products are grown in certified organic North American farms and are tested by third-party independent laboratories for fungicides, pesticides and other contaminants. Our test results are always posted online for your review.

It is easy to distinguish hemp seed oil from hemp oil – just pay attention to the name! Hemp seed oil may have broad health benefits, while hemp oil is rich in CBDs, whose possible health benefits are much more specific.
